What is granite?
Granite is a natural stone that is taken out of mountains around the world. The word granite comes from the Latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock. A large part of it comes from Brazil. Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Formed from molten lava then slowly cooled making it hard and dense as a diamond. Granites are usually medium to coarsely crystalline, occasionally with some individual crystals larger than the groundmass forming a rock known as porphyry. It is much harder than marble and way more durable. Marble scratches so easy and is very porous. Granite is so dense and so hard that all tools used the cut and fabricate it have diamonds impregnated in them and must be used with water. Water acts as a lubricate and keeps the granite and diamonds cool. Diamonds are the only thing that can cut granite. There are hundreds of colors available that you can't imagine. And because granite is a natural stone you may see imperfections in it, like so called "fissures". Fissures are often confused with cracks as they appear on the surface of the granite. Fissures were created when the stone was first formed. There is a difference between a crack and a fissure. Fissures are naturally occurring and represent no issue in the performance of the stone. Cracks are visible on top and bottom of the stone. Dynamite used at the grante quarry to blast the stone out of the mountains may cause some cracks to form in the granite.*
